In this tutorial, we will walk you through setting up a Virtual Private Server (VPS) on Contabo and install Ubuntu. Do not worry if you have no technical background; we will keep things simple and straightforward.

Step 1: Create a Contabo Account

  • Navigate to Contabo.

  • Click on the "Sign Up" button.

Step 2: Select the Right VPS

  • Choose "VPS" then "Cloud VPS".

  • Opt for "CLOUD VPS 1".

  • Configure your VPS accordingly.

    • For configurations requiring 4 cores and 8GB of RAM, "CLOUD VPS 1" is recommended.

Step 3: Choose Term Length, Region, and Storage Type

  • Decide on the term length for your service.

  • Select a region close to you or your target audience for optimized performance.

  • Choose your preferred storage type.

Step 4: Select Your Operating System Image

  • Under the "Popular" section, find and click on the "Ubuntu" tab.

  • Select “Ubuntu 20.04” from the available options.

Step 5: Set Your Server Password

  • Create and set a secure password for your server.

Step 6: Leave Other Options as Default

  • Proceed with the remaining options left at their default settings.

Step 7: Go to VPS Control Panel

  • Complete your purchase.

  • After purchase, go to “VPS control” to view your server's "Public IP Address" and "Default user".

Step 8: Connect to Your VPS

  1. For Windows Users:

    • Download Putty.

    • Use Putty to connect by entering your server IP and using the credentials found in “VPS control”.

  2. For MacOS Users:

    • Open the Terminal.

    • Type ssh [user]@[server ip], replacing [user] and [server ip] with the information from “VPS control”.

    • When prompted, enter the password you set in Step 5.
